Hamrick’s own page warns the trial watermark can’t be removed later.

FrontBack Scanner is genuinely free: no watermark, no trial clock, no photo limit.
Yes. VueScan’s Multi crop feature (with Autoskew) detects several photos in a preview and saves each as its own file[2]. In practice it needs visible space between prints and some babysitting: users report crop boxes snapping onto neighboring photos when adjusted and frames numbering in an unexpected order[3]. FrontBack Scanner’s detection is built only for this job: it boxes each print automatically, handles nearly-touching and white-bordered prints, turns each one right-side up, and names files in sequence.
Three real things. Film and slides: FrontBack Scanner doesn’t scan film at all. Orphaned scanners: VueScan ships its own drivers for thousands of models whose manufacturer drivers died with old operating systems[4]; FrontBack Scanner needs a scanner your Mac can already see. And platforms: VueScan runs on Windows and Linux too. If you’re in any of those camps, buy VueScan; it’s earned its reputation there.
FrontBack Scanner works with any scanner macOS can see: Wi-Fi and network all-in-ones that support AirScan/eSCL need no driver at all, and USB flatbeds work through their macOS Image Capture driver (the Epson Perfection V600, for example, works after installing Epson’s free driver). VueScan’s unique trick is scanners macOS can not see, because it bundles its own drivers. If your scanner only works in VueScan, FrontBack can’t drive it.
