The AI Photo Organizer for Family Collections

An AI Tool That Puts Your Photos in Chronological Order

Timeline Scan's AI studies every photo you give it: the timestamps inside the files, the faces and how they age from picture to picture, handwriting on the backs of scans, even the clothing and cars. Then it sorts your whole collection oldest to newest.

Why you're searching for an AI tool

Sorting by date only works when the dates are right

Every photo app can sort by date. The problem is the dates themselves: scanned photos carry the day they were scanned, old files carry the day they were copied, and thousands of pictures end up in an order that means nothing.

Fixing that by hand means looking at each photo, deciding on a year, and typing it in, thousands of times. That is exactly the kind of judgment call (who is in the picture, how old they look, what era it feels like) that AI can now make in seconds per photo. Timeline Scan is that AI, wrapped in a service that hands you back an ordered collection.

  • Scans from 1962 sitting next to last week's phone pictures
  • “Sort by date” just shows the day the scanner ran (why scans defeat auto-sorters)
  • Google Photos and Apple Photos find the faces, but not the years
  • You'd know the year in a second: the computer never asked you

What the AI looks at

Six Kinds of Clues, One Ordered Timeline

No single clue dates every photo. Timeline Scan's AI combines everything it can see in and around each picture, then places it on your family's timeline.

The dated photo scan_012.jpg Dated Dec 25, 1996
  • Real date written inside the file
  • Handwriting saved with the photo
  • Faces tagged

Every clue gets weighed together, and the strongest ones win: this photo comes back dated Dec 25, 1996, with the handwriting saved alongside it and the faces tagged.

“Doesn't my photo app already have AI?”

Photo Apps Sort by the Date. We Find the Date.

The AI in Google Photos, Apple Photos, and similar apps is built for search: it finds faces, beaches, and birthday cakes. But the timeline you scroll is sorted by one thing only, the date stored inside each file. If that date is wrong, no amount of face recognition fixes the order.

Timeline Scan does the missing step: it works out the real date and writes it into the file in the standard place every photo app reads. After that, your existing apps finally sort your collection correctly. See how that plays out in Google Photos and Immich.

  • Correct order inside Google Photos, Apple Photos, or Immich
  • One folder sorted oldest to newest, in ascending order
  • Folders by year, or by year and month
  • A slideshow that tells the story in the right sequence
  • Dates that travel with the files, forever

Three steps, no software to learn

How It Works

Step 1

Add your photos

Open timelinescan.com in your web browser and add your scanned photo files. Nothing to install.

Step 2

The AI builds your timeline

Timeline Scan dates each photo from timestamps, faces and their ages, handwriting, and visual clues, then lays the whole collection out in chronological order for you to review and adjust.

Step 3

Take your photos home in order

Download everything sorted oldest to newest (or in folders by year, month, or person), or send it straight to Google Photos or Immich with the corrected dates inside.

AI You Can Check, on Photos That Stay Yours

Every date is reviewable

The AI shows you its timeline before you download. Spot a photo in the wrong year? Enter a more accurate date; nothing is final until you say so.

Your pictures are never altered

Same pixels, same quality. The corrected date is written inside each file in the standard spot photo apps read. Nothing else about your photos changes.

Yours to keep, forever

You end up with ordinary files in ordinary folders on your own computer. No subscription is needed to keep them, and no special app is needed to open them.

Common questions

Questions About AI Photo Organizing

Is there an AI tool that sorts photos by how much the people in them have aged?

Yes. Timeline Scan recognizes the same people across your collection and uses how old each person looks in each photo, together with the birth years you share, as one of its dating clues. Combined with timestamps, handwriting on the backs of scans, and visual clues like clothing and cars, this lets it place photos in chronological order even when the files carry no dates at all.

Can AI put scanned photos with no dates in chronological order?

Yes. Scanned photos are the main thing Timeline Scan is built for. Scans carry the scan date, not the date the picture was taken, so normal photo apps pile them all on one day. Timeline Scan estimates the real year of each scan from handwriting, printed lab dates, faces, and visual clues, then sorts the collection oldest to newest. You can review every estimated date before you download; read more about how we fix scanned photo dates.

Doesn't Google Photos or Apple Photos already organize photos with AI?

Their AI recognizes faces and objects for search, but the timeline itself is sorted only by the date stored inside each file. If that date is wrong (which is true for every scanned photo), the AI features do not fix it. Timeline Scan works out the real date and writes it into the file in the standard place, so the photos then sort correctly in Google Photos, Apple Photos, Immich, or any other app.

Do I have to tag faces or enter dates myself?

No. The AI does the work automatically. Optionally, you can name the key people in your photos and share their birth years, which sharpens the age-based dating, and you can review and adjust any date before you download. But nothing requires manual tagging photo by photo.

What do I get back once the AI has organized my photos?

Your original files, unchanged in quality, with the corrected date written inside each one, delivered the way you choose: one folder sorted oldest to newest (ascending order), folders by year, folders by year and month, folders by person, or straight into Google Photos or Immich. All the layouts are shown on the file download page, and you can download again in a different layout at no extra cost.

Is the AI photo organizer free to try?

Yes. You can try it free with no credit card, and see your own photos dated and put in order before paying anything. After that, pricing is per photo dated; see the pricing page for current rates.
